Opportunities to Volunteer
Put your compassion, skills, and interests into action to support the LGBTQ community!
At Lyon-Martin, our volunteers are an integral part of our team helping our vibrant clinic stay on top of patient care and everyday tasks. We have 4 different volunteer opportunities: Clinical Volunteering, Administrative Volunteering, Community Outreach Team volunteering, or event volunteering. On any given day, we have 2 to 10 volunteers helping in the clinic. Throughout the year, we rely on volunteers to help plan and execute events. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, but what they have in common is a generous heart and a desire to help women and transgender people in need.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH TEAM VOLUNTEERS
The Community Outreach Team is responsible for going to events to inform communities in the Bay Area about Lyon-Martin's services and programs. Members of the team will attend a special training to learn about Lyon-Martin's history, services, and special programs. Team members will also be trained in effective outreach strategies and how to answer frequently asked questions and concerns. Community Outreach Team members must table at a minimum of 3 events every six months, but can choose the events they attend based on availability. Upcoming events will be announced on a special Outreach Team list serve, and shifts will be filled on a first come, first served basis. The important presence of team members at local events will help Lyon-Martin get new patients, donors and volunteers! If you're interested in joining our new Community Outreach Team, please fill out an application below.
EVENT VOLUNTEERS
Event volunteers help Lyon-Martin at the many different events we participate in throughout the year, most of which serve as major fundraisers for the clinic and our patients. We also recruit volunteers for the events of our community partners who support us financially. All of these events are unique, a great chance to meet lots of folks within the community, and without a doubt, lots of fun! You do not need to fill out an application or attend an orientation for event volunteering.
If you're interested in learning about events that we need your help with, please email our volunteer coordinators at volunteering@lyon-martin.org to be added to our upcoming events mailing list that goes out about once a month.
CLINIC VOLUNTEERS
If you're interested in our clinical volunteer program, please fill out the application below.
As Level I Clinic Volunteers, you complete 60 hours working behind the scenes in the Front Office, Clinic, and Mental Health departments. This will give you a sense of our operations and the different aspects that make a community clinic run.
Once you've completed 60 hours you are eligible to move onto Level II which has an additional weekend training requirement and prepares you to become a Volunteer MA.
Medical Assistants will be rooming patients, taking vitals, chief complaints, med list and allergies, and chaperoning procedures. You will also be trained to do specimen testing, EKGs, urine tests, and other clinical diagnostic testing. On occasion, volunteer MA's will have the opportunity to apply to become a Rapid HIV Test Counselor!
Once a Level II Clinic Volunteer, you will be considered volunteer staff. We will rely on your scheduled shift in our staff scheduling and you will be included in staff functions/events.
ADMINISTRATIVE VOLUNTEERS
As an administrative volunteer, you help the clinic with billing, fundraising, donor database upkeep, and other important administrative tasks. Administrative volunteering is ideal for people with data entry, finance and other skills who want to help Lyon-Martin without making the commitment to the clinic volunteer program.
If you are interested in becoming an administrative volunteer, please fill out the application, and be sure to include any relevant experience or skills you may have. There are no volunteer "levels" as an administrative volunteer, but we still require at least a 6 month commitment of at least 3 hours a week.
What else is required of Volunteer Clinic and Administrative Assistants?
We ask that you help out with 2 events per year. Our events include big annual events like Pride (doing breast and chest exams at Dyke March and Trans March), Up Your Alley, and Folsom St. Fair. They also include more targeted community events like Transgender Health Forums, Health Fairs, and other community outreach events.
What's the time commitment?
As a Clinical or Administrative Volunteer we ask that you make a 6 month commitment to volunteering with a minimum of 3 hours per week. We require no less than a 3 hour shift as it's hard to get projects and tasks fully completed in less time than that. You will also have an allotment of Personal Time Off for you to use when needed.
Community Outreach Team Volunteers must volunteer at a minimum of 3 events every 6 months, and must make a minimum 6 month commitment.
How do I become a clinical volunteer?
We ask you to please fill out the application below which serves as the first step in determining if your interests and goals will be possible to be met as well as assess if you will be a good fit for our clinic. People who are a good match for availability and ability will be invited to Lyon-Martin volunteer orientation. It's impossible to accept everyone, but if you are not selected for this round and have interest in applying again, we welcome you to do so.
Please feel free to contact our volunteer coordinators at (415) 901-7131 or volunteering@lyon-martin.org with any questions.
